Quiet Week?

Work, and life in general, is a bit busy at the moment so haven't had time to do much this week. However I did finish off clause 5 of the Stargazer badge by drawing another five constellations in my notebook, as well as popping into the garden to stare at the skies again. The moon is lovely. All that is left is to visit an observatory or science centre, and to complete my logbook for December. 

A fellow Rebel and I have started planning an adventure as part of our Maverick Awards, and this will include a trip to the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium later this month. We may also visit the Christmas Market for our Christmas badges! It will be lovely to have a change of scene.

I continue to work on my Linguist badge, by practicing German on Duolingo every day, and currently have a streak of 69 days - I am pretty impressed with this as I usually give up after about 5 days. I keep meaning to try and have a conversation with my sister who is as close to a native German speaker as I can find, however I keep forgetting. I did manage to translate the two word title of her book though when I saw it, and was absurdly pleased with myself. 

Fundraiser badge was completed by my second stint volunteering for my local Foodbank, which I started doing after research for the Foodbank Challenge badge; I am not a fan of doing sponsored events, for all sorts of reasons, so opted instead to donate my time to Foodbank over two sessions at their monthly textile sales. As a team we raised approximately £600 each time which is considerably more than I would raise by a sponsored event. I completed all other clauses properly, and will continue volunteering at the monthly events.

Finishing touches for the Event Planner badge have continued, with organising the Secret Santa for my department at work which will take place at the staff Christmas meal. Birthday parties for small people are so much easier to organise than a meal out for adults! Kids are easily pleased with the promise of cake and silly games in my experience.

November's 'Write Every Day' challenge is almost finished, albeit a few days late. I really enjoyed this challenge, and completed a variety of writing including blog posts, long diary entries (I normally write a bullet point or two), and random rantings about things that have happened during the day. I generally write just before going to bed and I have found it a nice way to round off the day. I will try to continue the practice through December.

Finally, while forced to sit and be still I started making origami boxes for a new Advent calendar but ran out of paper quickly. None of my local shops sell any so I have to wait for a delivery. Patience is a virtue....

I completed my Bronze Maverick Award this month - very exciting, and I feel I should share my adventure with you.  My Community For this I ran a Warhammer Club after school for Secondary School students with an interest in the hobby. I have been doing this for some years with a fellow Rebel, but this year decided that the club needed to be more structured and the kids needed to be given a focus and more responsibility. To this end we created the 'Council of Doom' for the older students so that they had a say in how the club was run, and took responsibility for teaching new and less experienced students about the joys of Warhammer. This worked well until they had to go to revision classes instead. However, younger students took up the mantle of responsibility and organised our resources cupboard to a degree I am incapable of, and continued building our 'Age of Sigmar' army in readiness for the Armies on Parade competition in the autumn. Ultimate Rebel

As you may have guessed from my subtle title, I gained Ultimate Rebel status this week by finishing some Wild Rebel badges; I finished Palaeontologist a few weeks ago, and this week finished Nature Lover and Observer. Neither were too much of a stretch as they encompassed many things I already do. I highly recommend sitting in the window of a coffee shop for an hour and actively watch the world go by; it's fascinating what and who you see. I went for a slow nature walk as it was too cold to sit in the squirrel hide for long, and saw several bird species, a horse being taken for a stroll (I got to pat it and I am usually scared of horses, so yay to me!), lots of lichen and fungi and a glorious variety of ivy leaves. There were lots of early spring flowers emerging, and to top everything off I saw a red squirrel scampering up and down a tree and along a path. Summer Silliness

This month has been rather slower on the badge front due to end-of-school-year exhaustion for one thing. However, on the penultimate week of term I accompanied a school Duke of Edinburgh's Award trip to the Brecon Beacons in Wales, with fellow rebel Rachel and two D of E leaders. Obviously we had to take Fred the houseplant with us and he accompanied us on several walks, stayed in tents and minibuses and played in an adventure playground. He also came to a cafe. The weather was generally awful, but he coped magnificently (as did we and the kids). While there I finished my Camper Badge, and started my Advanced Camper Badge. I only had the menu planning and camp kitchen to do for camping, as I had camped lots the previous year but hadn't needed to cater. Advanced camping should be finished after a festival next month and Rebel Camp. I highly recommend camping in the rain, and hiking in the Welsh hills on damp days.
