We are doing Science!

Phew, book 2 is available to everyone now so I can mention it! My daughter (good at Science) and I started the Scientist badge at the weekend; I jumped in all gung-ho and "Let's do this now!!", rubbing my hands in glee as we prepared to make salt and sugar crystals, and then test lots of household substances with cabbage water indicator. Daughter was appalled, freaked out slightly and made me take her out for a cuppa and a sandwich so that we could plan the experiments properly and use the scientific method. Gosh. Anyway, once we returned, we measured everything out properly, made notes, and I now have a line of jam jars on my windowsill full of salt and sugar solutions which are failing to form crystals. We bought shot glasses for the indicator experiment and had a gratifying time getting excited when the indicator changed colour! I love this experiment.

I also started the Politician badge by helping a friend deliver leaflets as part of his campaign to be the Liberal Democrat councillor representing his ward on the County Council. This was a lovely task, out in the fresh air on a beautiful day seeing parts of the County that were new to me. I will do it again, for the exercise and the views if for nothing else! Oh yes, he won his seat!

Advanced Adulting has begun and my house is looking a bit tidier than it has done in a while; the first week was quite time consuming even though my house isn't a complete tip, but the second week was much quicker as I hadn't yet wrecked my previous efforts.

I made an unexpected start on Advanced Writer and finally got round to writing part of a Cipher and Code Breaking book that I have been wittering on about for several years; it is really for my Cipher Club at school as they are a little too reliant on using computers to do all the hard work for them, but also for me as a memory aid! I may publish it further one day if it is any good. I then realised that that didn't fit the categories and I have already started the badge by trying to improve this blog. It has been a long day.....

I completed my Bronze Maverick Award this month - very exciting, and I feel I should share my adventure with you.  My Community For this I ran a Warhammer Club after school for Secondary School students with an interest in the hobby. I have been doing this for some years with a fellow Rebel, but this year decided that the club needed to be more structured and the kids needed to be given a focus and more responsibility. To this end we created the 'Council of Doom' for the older students so that they had a say in how the club was run, and took responsibility for teaching new and less experienced students about the joys of Warhammer. This worked well until they had to go to revision classes instead. However, younger students took up the mantle of responsibility and organised our resources cupboard to a degree I am incapable of, and continued building our 'Age of Sigmar' army in readiness for the Armies on Parade competition in the autumn. Ultimate Rebel

As you may have guessed from my subtle title, I gained Ultimate Rebel status this week by finishing some Wild Rebel badges; I finished Palaeontologist a few weeks ago, and this week finished Nature Lover and Observer. Neither were too much of a stretch as they encompassed many things I already do. I highly recommend sitting in the window of a coffee shop for an hour and actively watch the world go by; it's fascinating what and who you see. I went for a slow nature walk as it was too cold to sit in the squirrel hide for long, and saw several bird species, a horse being taken for a stroll (I got to pat it and I am usually scared of horses, so yay to me!), lots of lichen and fungi and a glorious variety of ivy leaves. There were lots of early spring flowers emerging, and to top everything off I saw a red squirrel scampering up and down a tree and along a path. Summer Silliness

This month has been rather slower on the badge front due to end-of-school-year exhaustion for one thing. However, on the penultimate week of term I accompanied a school Duke of Edinburgh's Award trip to the Brecon Beacons in Wales, with fellow rebel Rachel and two D of E leaders. Obviously we had to take Fred the houseplant with us and he accompanied us on several walks, stayed in tents and minibuses and played in an adventure playground. He also came to a cafe. The weather was generally awful, but he coped magnificently (as did we and the kids). While there I finished my Camper Badge, and started my Advanced Camper Badge. I only had the menu planning and camp kitchen to do for camping, as I had camped lots the previous year but hadn't needed to cater. Advanced camping should be finished after a festival next month and Rebel Camp. I highly recommend camping in the rain, and hiking in the Welsh hills on damp days.
